Day Four: Tuesday, July 8

A day of highs and lows for our merry band. After a light breakfast and the ritual sandwich making, the Jumanji, Catch-Phrase and Rook teams proceeded to their respective work sites. Good progress was made by the Jumanji team as they installed the handrails on their wheelchair ramp. If all goes well, this group will finish ahead of schedule and possibly have time for more improvements to their family’s home. For the Catch-phrase and Rook teams the news was mixed. After digging a long drainage trench through clay and rock on Monday, the Catchphrase team discovered previous, and unsuccessful efforts to improve drainage on the property. In fact, they found that the drainage problems were much more severe than previously assumed, probably involving a nearby flooded coal mine that percolates water through the property. Stay tuned for more from this hardworking group.

A change in plans for the Rook team meant that Monday’s back-breaking efforts to remove a well constructed stone retaining wall were all in vain. Instead, this group will pour a new concrete and rebar foundation for the back of their property using the remains of the existing stone wall as a base. While frustrating, this was actually very good news for the Rook group, as the prospect of taking down this well constructed retaining wall stone by stone was not a pleasant one. The group made good progress installing exterior siding and interior insulation on the back room of their family’s home.

The highlight of the day for everyone was a visit to the Appalachian Traditions VIllage in nearby Norton. One of our number, Giuliano, added his guitar and vocal talents to a jam session of traditional and country string players. A number of our group contributed vocals as well, singing “Amazing Grace,” “Siahamba,” “This Little Light of Mine”, and joining the players on the chorus of “How Great Thou Art.” A highlight of the evening was a beautiful rendition of “Just as the Evening Sun” by the father-daughter team of Giuliano and Anna Chicco. Way to go guys! A long and fruitful day ended with a quick stop at the DQ for a late night dessert. We go to bed happy and healthy and looking forward to another productive day!
