Presbyterian Women
PURPOSE
Forgiven and freed by God in Jesus Christ, and empowered by the Holy Spirit, we commit ourselves:
- to nurture our faith through prayer and Bible study,
-
to support the mission of the church worldwide,
-
to work for justice and peace,
-
and to build an inclusive, caring community of women that strengthens the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) and witnesses to the promise of God’s kingdom.
At Nassau Presbyterian Church, all women members of the church automatically belong to PW USA. Many women choose to be participants and involve themselves in our programs and activities. Some of the things we do are outlined below
Circle Meetings
At NPC, we currently have 4 Circles operating. The purpose of a Circle is three-fold.
-First, each is a group for fellowship, meeting at least once a month throughout the academic year. In this way, we get to know each other, and reach out to each other in times of joy and sorrow. This fellowship is widened to include all women with the inclusion of our all-church fellowship events, and our Circle specific ones as well.
-Second, each group participates in year-long Bible study from the PW USA’s yearly lesson book. This year, we are proud that our own Joyce M. Walker is the co-author of our lesson book, which focuses on the books of Jonah and Ruth. We take turns leading the discussions, using the lesson’s easy-to-follow format designed for all levels of Bible literacy.
-Third, each group participates in our overall missions, e.g. Wreath sales at Christmas to benefit the Maine at Eastward (MATE) mission, and holding a yearly seminar highlighting work with the homeless/battered women shelters, etc.

PW USA Presbytery-Wide Activities
We have a Presbytery-wide community of women’s events, sending representatives to these events for feed-back and sharing of goals.
Helping achieve worthy goals within our church, e.g. raising funds for youth mission trips and holding events that benefit all members.
Mission matters to Presbyterian Women. In addition to being one of the points of the PW Purpose, support for mission is a thread running through all the work PW does in congregations, presbyteries, synods and church-wide. Mission takes many forms for Presbyterian Women—participation in or support of the Global Exchange, the Thanks Offering, giving money to PW and ecumenical offerings as well as the PW mission pledge and sharing in hands-on mission activities. We also participate in Presbyterian Disaster Assistance, currently being put to use in the California fire disaster relief.
