Virginia Mills, 1901-1989

Virginia Mills - photo or image needed. Virginia Mills was one of the first African American women to own and operated a hairdressing business in Princeton. She was born in 1901 on Chambers Street. She opened her beauty salon in 1935. Mrs. Mills was an entrepreneur who also trained women in cosmetology and business skills.

In 1970, after 45 years, she retired. Her husband was Lieutenant colonel Berkeley Mills who was the first Black postman in Princeton. She is remembered as a generous benefactor and was especially appreciated for having purchased many cemetery plots for those who were financially unable to do so themselves.
