John Potter Stockton, 1825-1900

John Potter Stockton John Potter Stockton, son of Robert Field Stockton, was born in Princeton, N.J., August 2, 1826. He attended private schools and graduated from the College of New Jersey (now Princeton University) in 1843. He studied law and was admitted to the bar in 1846 and practiced in Princeton and Trenton, N.J. In 1845 he married Sarah Marks of Philadelphia. In 1857 he was appointed United States Minister to Rome and served for four years. In 1869 was elected United States Senator from New Jersey for one full term. In 1877 he became Attorney General of New Jersey and was re-elected in 1882 and 1887. He and his wife had three children, two sons and one daughter. He died in New York City on January 22, 1900,
